For many years, our 7th grade Catalina Island trip has been a valued FJA tradition. This year, students spent three days at the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI), taking part in hands-on, STEM-based outdoor learning.
During the trip, students explored ocean and island ecosystems through activities like snorkeling (day and night), tidepooling, and hiking. They also participated in marine science labs and dissections, studying algae, fish, sharks, invertebrates, and oceanography. Along the way, they built teamwork skills and practiced problem-solving in new situations.
As shared by trip leader, Matt Sarnoski:
What an adventure we had together this year on our Catalina Island Field Trip! The constant activity, limited sleep, and new experiences pushed students out of their comfort zone and helped them grow. Your students were fun-loving, adventurous, and understanding, even when asked to do difficult things. Thank you for helping make this experience possible!

We’re glad to continue this tradition and appreciate our families support in making it happen!
