I Love my job!!!!!  This is my 13th year as Director of Flagstaff Junior Academy  and have thoroughly enjoyed being an integral part of its growth and evolution. FJA is at a beautiful place right now with incredible teachers, supportive parents, and the absolute BEST students. We have a school community that is unsurpassed…..a very caring and close-knit family.

On paper, I possess a BS in Elementary Education, Masters Degree In Educational Administration.  I also am a Certified Support Group Facilitator and was appointed as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for foster children.

My career started 34 years ago as a third grade teacher in Medford, Mass., a suburb of Boston. Since that time I have taught 3rd -  7th grades, and was an administrator in the Deer Valley School District for twenty years. One of the highpoints of my career was being selected the first Teacher of the Year in 1996.

I have served on numerous Boards throughout the years, but consider my seat on the Arizona Charter Schools Association for seven years to be one of the most productive and effective. Having made the move from the public school system to a charter school nine years ago, I have acquired a multitude of knowledge about this movement. It’s all about Choice, Creativity, and Curricular Focus.

I have always been very proud of the impact I have made on children’s lives and the fact that I know I made a difference.

Personal:

The three happiest days of my life were the births of my two daughters, Adrianna (34) and Katrina (25) and my marriage to John, an independent contractor in Flagstaff. Adrianna, a former Spanish and Montessori teacher at FJA, is currently   a Doctor of Oriental Medicine in Virginia.  Kat (as she is called) is attending Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz with aspirations of being a firefighter. She always thanks me for our move to Flagstaff. She thoroughly loved her high school years and played three varsity sports.

My life has been heavily involved with competitive sports and animals. A love of horses started for me at a very young age. It evolved into years of showing, jumping, and raising thoroughbreds, I was also involved in breeding, showing and obedience / protection training Rottweilers. I was a collegiate gymnastics judge for several years, and also competed regularly in 10k running events and even completed a triathlon. I have always loved setting challenging goals for myself and achieving them! I am so proud of the FJA staff and community in this phenomenal school!

Hazel Willis

I have been the Business Manager / Technology Sais Coordinator for FJA since 1997. I feel very fortunate to be a part of the FJA Team.  Prior to coming to Flagstaff I was employed by the Needles Unified School District in California for several years.

I have two grown children, David and Shelley. David graduated from NAU and is a graphic designer in Boulder, Colorado.  Shelley graduated from NAU with a chemistry major with an emphasis in Forensics. She moved to Scottsdale, Az. and is employed at Scottsdale Health Care. As you could tell by looking at my office board I enjoy not only my two pomeranians but my 3 Himilayan/persian cats!

I am the PROUD grandma of Emmett, who was born to David and Lauren in 2002. I have also helped Michael, ( my  other half) raise his three children, Matt, Anthony and Amanda, two of which attended FJA since first grade.  I am very thankful for our family!

I enjoy the outdoors. Happiest when I am out on the lake or on the river, basking in the sun with a fishing pole in my hand. Not necessarily a fish on the end of the hook:) I especially enjoy our family time at the lake and an occasional barbeque on the back porch...and a good game of layered scrabble.
